💳More defenders of DEI

Jamie Dimon CEO offered staff and society some solace in the wake of the challenges from conservative activist shareholders and the Trump administration's with some recent comments in an interview at Davos to CNBC fresh off the back of a 8% pay rise that netted him a pay packet of $39m💰

When asked about his response to DEI critics he stated, "Bring them on," as he reaffirmed the bank's commitment to reaching out to diverse communities, including Black, Hispanic, LGBTQ and veteran populations by saying he refuses to “pander to any which side or any which thing,” stating "We’re going to continue to reach out to the Black community, the Hispanic community, the LGBT community, the veterans community,” he said" stating that working to include marginalized groups in JPMorgan’s business is good for its bottom line.

Similar comments were echoed by Goldman Sachs

😬DEI startups😬

Crunchbase reported that - "Startups that launched and scaled with a focus on aiding workplace diversity, equity and inclusion efforts a few years ago haven’t been heavy recipients of follow-on funding of late."

Probably not a surprise to folks, but with the Trump administration going to war on regulation that has helped build the business case for these firms to have a market, investors have gotten very conscious in the wake of the pull backs from big corporations whether there is a continued growth story for these firms.

The story broadly affects the wider employment market with funding across stages to U.S. companies in the employment, recruiting and career planning sectors down to $988 million in 2024 — down from $1.73 billion in 2023 and from the peak in $7.5 billion, from 2021.

🧠Things that make you go hmmm🧠

📊Is this peak of US AI tech stocks📊

So a little known Chinese startup’s $6m Chatbot product saw over $1tn wiped off US big tech stocks

How? The company developed bespoke algorithms to build its model using reduced-capability H800 chips produced by America’s Nvidia and spending less than $6m (£4.8m) And the results put it on par if not better with Meta's LLama 3 and Open AI's GPT-4o and a range of other leading models😲

As a result investors were like, "what is this US AI hype"? If a chinese startup can do this all with cheap Nvidia chips, maybe they won't sell so many expensive ones. If the same results can be performed at a fraction of the cost maybe, the companies are overvalued leading towards a big sell off of the stocks. Well

Deepseek Released a model raises doubts about sustainability of western artificial intelligence boom. It's earning's results week too for the Mag 7 and given market pessimism about how they'll do, let see if the results are compounded.📊

Deepseek is primarily a research firm, so the DeepSeek assistant and underlying code can be downloaded for free which has sent it to the top of the App store and as a result

The larger question has suddenly become whether the hundreds of billions of dollar investment in AI needs re-evaluation.”💸

So what?

Maybe we've reached peak AI investment hype

👀Hey Jude👀

The government has a big decision on their hands around AI and copyright. What do they do?👀

On one hand, the big AI companies are saying they need to have access to data much of which is copyrighted to have their models to learn from. Now traditionally if you want to use a copyrighted bit of material you pay the creator💸

On the other hand, rights holders are saying that without remuneration they lose the value of what they have created, are likely be be displaced (Some deepfake using their likeness or Art to inspire a generative version), you remove much incentive for new people to enter the field and that it is unjust that they are not compensated for the work that they have done under a regime of legal understanding when they created it as the goalposts have changed🤔

Well Sir Paul Mccartney  of the beatles thinks the government should protect artists. Is this at the expense of growth and productivity gains? The government may feel, regulate AI too heavily and it will hold back AI adoption and innovation, reducing competitiveness and sifel potential economic growth.

There isn't a simple answer and some may suggest it is a false dichotomy, but can one really have their cake and eat it?🎂

So what?

What do you think the government should do?

😅$500bn on US AI😅

So on of the biggest tech announcements in the first week of the trump government was that OpenAI was teaming up with SoftBank and Oracle on $500B data centre infrastructure project called Stargate with the objective of creating “hundreds of thousands” of jobs and “secure American leadership in AI.”💰

Those in the EU saw this and immediately had calls to do something similar, with other countries like the UK increasingly worried about being a vassal state🏝

With such large sums on offer focus quickly came out where the money was coming from as the amount promised isn't that far shy of the total valuation of the three companies.🤔

Well it turns out SoftBank and OpenAI each plan to commit $19 billion of capital to Stargate in exchange with both own 40% of the joint venture with the rest we assumed plugged by Oracle and MGX the UAE backed Middle East AI fund💸

Given Elon Musk has spent reportedly $12bn of his cash building data centres in the USA he wrote in a series of posts on X that They don’t actually have the money,” and “SoftBank has well under $10 billion secured. I have that on good authority.” before going on to criticise Sam Altman, saying, “Sam is a swindler.”👀

Sam came back with a jab saying

"wrong, as you surely know.

want to come visit the first site already under way?

this is great for the country. i realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role i hope you’ll mostly put first.

— Sam Altman (@sama) January 22, 2025

So what?

$500bn is a LOT of money and it really does, if it happens, put the USA front and centre of a private sector AI push. Given the shear capital involved it's hard to see how anyone except China will be able to stay involved in the race. For context on a investment drive the UK government got companies to pledge $63bn for their best efforts. The $500bn is across just 4 organisations and does not include the 5 most highly valued tech companies in the work which are all US based

🗽Bigger than Manhattan🗽

Ok not quite, but Zuk announced a $60bn+ investment on AI announcing Meta will build a 2GW+ datacenter that is so large it would cover a significant part of Manhattan🗽

The $10 billion development in Richland Parish, northeast Louisiana will total more than 4 million sq ft (371,610 sqm

Zuk also leaned into his masculine energy with more vanity metrics around the number of GPU's and Nationalism in terms of America's AI leadership. You can see his thread here

So what?

The data centre building is only just starting with the new 'mines bigger than yours' context starting

⭐️Combating fake reviews⭐️

The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an investigation into the major online platforms such as Google and Amazon, way back in 2020 and finally now have an agreement to combat fake reviews with Google😅

Why? Well fake reviews influence consumer behavior and that's bad and the companies care because they can get fined up to 10% of their global revenue if they get it wrong😲

So what will Google do? Well use AI duh🤣 (and user feedback) to identify more fakes and it has ramped up the punishments too with, the worst offenders will have their review function deactivated, so they cant receive any new reviews and those who repeatedly post fake or misleading reviews will be banned from posting even if they aren't in the UK Periodt 💁🏾‍♂️

Google will have to report to the CMA every year on how it's doing, so let's see if it makes a difference

So what?

Competition heats up in social media land as the products start to converge to try and sweep up all of your time similar to the super app concept
