😒DEI cuts in practice😒
If you're reading this you'll know DEI has been under attack. Not only that but we've also seen companies pull back from investing in it. At the most extreme we've seen layoffs (some estimate across tech at over 1/4 of a million folks have been let go) in the teams but this week one company hit the news for just effectively saying screw it all, and getting rid of the whole team!Β
As zoom laid off 150 employeesβ~2% of its the workforce it claimed folks working on DEI were not in in what the company described as βcritical areas for the future.β One of the teams that Zoom deemed superfluous was the group of employees working on diversity, equity, and inclusion, Fast company said in the wake of a Bloomberg report.
The parent the first company to do such an activity but even Elon Musk at X left a couple of people in the department (down from 30) but hey, who would want to join the Elon Musk inclusion club 😅. What company to be in eh.
Given we should offer an insight into what Zoom said, Chief operating officer Aparna Bawa claimed that Zoom would bring on DEI consultants who would focus on inclusion and would βchange its approach to DEI.β Fast Company got a statement out of zoom claiming βZoom remains committed to DEI and ensuring its principles remain firmly rooted in our DNA across our entire company.β Lets see if anyone believes them👀
You can read more in Fast Company here
Our SHAME on you award of the week goes to (And it says a lot given they've taken the crown off of our Minister for in(equality)👑) ... Zoom🥇
Given that we'll politely remind you that there are numerous other VoIP alternatives (Google, Microsoft, Cisco, WebEx, Even bloody Skype still exists) should you wish to explore them in the wake of this news as we will be doing. Given most of those tools do the same thing and more, reviewing that subscription may be prudentΒ Β

😯 Look at that 😯
So last week we told y'all to look at the stock market. If you did and decided to put some money into Nvidia or Arm you'd be down, so don't treat this as investment advice😅 Nevertheless, Nvidia's earning results are out this week so you could take a look at them💰
Anyways, OpenAI made the whole world gasp with some AMAZING visuals showing off their latest text to video tech called Sora.
If you've not seen it YOU HAVE TO take a curious look. We've linked to the WSJ coz Open AI's native video was 10mins longΒ
So what?Β
We've seen similar ones from Google but this looks a tad better (At the moment, but we all know fakes can deceiv, so we'll reserve full judgement til we can actually play with it

💸Zuck's week💸
So its been an interesting week for Mark Zuckerberg. he has been compared to Former Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer (see the video below which is regarded as one of the biggest 🤦🏽ββοΈ moments in hindsight tech), for his takedown video (Which is actually broadly agreeable) of the Apple Vision pro compared to his Meta Quest 3 device📺
If that wasn't enough, he tried to state the obvious about layoffs winning a new award for duh of the week lol, and finally got made into yet another meme (See below too)👀
Anyways Mark was always going to be in this newsletter for his radical takedown video on Apple's latest hardware. We've seen Tech CEO's move further away from the chumocracy of the mid 10's into more adversarial territory as growth becomes harder to find, lawsuits become more numerous and expensive, and well, social media becomes the default way to get anything across📲
Without the glitz and glam of a studio (or even some fancy AI background) he spoke for 10 mins largely ripping the Vision pro😱
It's not a surprise he would tout his own product, but this way of doing it drew a lot of comparisons with fails. We cant tell you our opinion on the Vision pro yet as we've not tried it (we'll gladly accept a donated device) ,but there are some folks that have done the paper analysis and tired to be unbiased which you can read here 🤓
One thing we can be sure of, in the UK you can actually get a quest, and it is about 7 times cheaper💰.
So despite them clearly being positioned for different markets it does provide some food for thought even if you are a Tech Billionaire running a trillion dollar company😅
If you're the suspicious type, then you may have alternative theories about why Mark Zuk has been UFC training. We doubt its to fight Elon if things really come to blows, but the internet wasn't kind to him as he reminded some folks of past trauma. This thread has some of the more shared ones,Β
We actually felt a bit 🙁 about it, as we don't like online bullying even if you have enough money not to care. Lead with Kindness folks🥰
BTW we have an event with Meta on their AI product coming up, If you want to join click here)
So what?Β
The chip game looks to be a lucrative one

👀The Government is actually trying to help get people into tech👀
Yep you did read that right, so we do advise you to sit down and put any hot drinks to the side😅.
After years of highlighting the skills gap issues that exist in our industry, the UK GOV has announced a new series of funded bootcamps. They sent us a press release but our AI Friends at Chat GPT have shrunk it, removed the hyperbole and juiced it just to give you the good bits so here is the info
The UK government introduces free tech bootcamps, promising Gen Z doubled salaries with no skills required to start.Β
Targeting roles in cloud computing and more, these bootcamps offer salaries up to Β£70K, significantly above the UK average. Aimed at filling the tech sector's skills gap, the initiative includes partnerships with giants like Google and AWS, covering essential digital skills to bolster the country's tech prowess. Open to all, these up-to-16-week courses guarantee an interview upon completion, setting participants on a fast track to lucrative tech careers.
More information on digital Skills Bootcamps is available here, including information on how to apply: gov.uk/digital-skillsΒ·Β Β Β Β Β·Β
