👀Workers rights👀
The UK Labour party government have released a draft of a new bill to "strengthen" workers rights which we imagine will dispropriate impact those in the most precarious work situations which tend to be folks from underrepresented communities👀
The government has said the bill includes
Give protection against unfair dismissal from day one, while allowing employers to operate probation periods
Establish parental and bereavement leave from day one
End exploitative zero hour contracts
End unscrupulous practices of fire and rehire and fire and replace
Make flexible working the norm where practical (Lets see what Amazon Say)
Deliver stronger dismissal protections for pregnant women and new mothers
Establish a new Fair Work Agency with new powers to enforce holiday pay
Strengthen statutory sick pay
The bill has been founded to have disproportionate impact on smaller businesses, responsible for employing 13 million workers an impact assessment report found.
However it is not all doom and gloom with, the £5bn represented a "modest" amount, less than 1.5% of the total amount spent by businesses on employing staff and
the "wellbeing" benefits of the measures, which include challenging the use of zero hours contracts and boosting sick pay, would amount to a £3bn gain.

🦾AI Employees🦾
Microsoft is introducing autonomous artificial intelligence agents, or virtual employees. Yep we could have done a big dystopian headline but we're trying to distinguish just how new this is after, CEO satya Nadella mentioned the tool would reduce “drudgery” and raise productivity by freeing up time to carry out more valuable tasks🤔
Turns out Microsoft is giving customers the ability to build their own AI agents as well as releasing 10 off-the-shelf bots that can carry out a range of roles including supply chain management and customer service😮
Watch out as he claims;
“These tools are fundamentally changing outsourcing, increasing value and reducing waste”👀🗑
So what?
It's a bit unclear on how AI will make many companies money, and this is Microsoft's latest attempt with "Assistive agents" the latest attempt to show businesses the value of said tech. Get it right and it's hard to not criticize the marketing bluster that this will do anything in the long term but lead to folks losing their jobs, but of course the impact will be differentiated.
We also what their rights will be going off of the labour party's plan. Will the bot get sick pay too😅

🤖X's new business model👋🏾
Yep like a lot of tech companies, it is selling your data!💻
They said in an update to their terms and conditions,
"By submitting, posting or displaying Content on or through the Services, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to make your Content available to the rest of the world,” the terms of service said, which includes the right to analyze any of that content “including, for example, for use with and training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or another type.”👩🏽💻
What does that mean, basically, by continuing to use the platform, users will agree that X can use their data to train its or others AI models and by continuing to use their products or services on or after November 15 they would be agreeing to letting whoever X allows to train their models on the tweets🤖
Big issue is the EU won't like this form of consent and we can imagine it won't be long (although it'll take some time) for them to issue some sort of legal notice on it🇪🇺
So what?
X needs to make more money given the number of users and advertisers who have left, so selling your data is its next choice.

🎧Spotify WFH🎧
In what may be described as a barb with a bit of sass Spotify CHRO Katarina Berg said the following in response to Amazon's return to work mandate as reported in Raconteur💁🏾♀️
“You can’t spend a lot of time hiring grown-ups and then treat them like children,” says Katarina Berg, Spotify’s CHRO. While she says she understands why some companies have returned to the office, “they are going back to what they know”, Berg is yet to find a reason to enforce a mandate for Spotify’s employees.
“We are a business that’s been digital from birth, so why shouldn’t we give our people flexibility and freedom?” she says. “Work is not a place you come to, it’s something you do.”
Spotify’s distributed working approach appears to have yielded positive results Attrition rates dropping by 15% following enabling employees to work from anywhere🏢
You can read more of the interview here👀
So what?
Flexible (although the labour party may not like it) working conditions are likely to become an additional non monetary benefit that employees will evaluate their employment decisions on. Without a doubt some folks will not want 5 days in the office and those businesses which use their flexible and remote policies will attract and retain talent differently as a result
