So we wanted to share some signs with you about what we saw in Silicon Republic about what to look out for when you're questioning the DEI commitment of companies.


Homogenous leadershipΒ

Inconsiderate infrastructure is the workplace set up to accommodate applicants considered β€˜atypical’, then it is likely that their DEI efforts are surface-level only.Β

📲Fearless fund settlement📲


So this one dropped a little to last minute for us last week but was important to note.👀


The Fearless Fund, The US fund that was giving out $20k to Black women that got sued for doing just that decided to settle?💸


Why? Well rather than lose and take it up to the Supreme Court which could set a judgment for a lifetime, they decided it's better to lose this battle and give scope for others doing similar work to continue either forcing individual litigation against them, or potentially nothing at all.😮

So what?

It's a win for those who don't like the concept of giving money only to Black Women. The decision to settle however still affords some scope for those who decide to do things for others too.

Yep it goes to the BBC with the headline "Women in tech groups 'can’t run on inspiration alone"😅


Yes for those who don't fully get that, paying the (Expensive) bills Women and groups like ours, doesn't happen without people paying for it.💁🏾‍♀️


For clarity we're funded largely by corporate sponsorship, and if we don't get enough of it, like the women cited, we can't run on inspiration alone. It's worth thinking about that in the context of the DEI push back's were seeing if you're in the position to make an introduction to someone for them, us or whoever if you think the world is a better place for our existence.🥰 Alternatively get a BTF ticket to start withΒ

So what?

What sort of world are we heading for if these groups fail to exist

📸Open AI's latest model📸


This week Open AI released o1 and o1-mini, which is claims are models that are better at answering more complex questions faster than a human can. The model is better at writing code and solving multistep problems than previous models, but it is more expensive for developers and slower to use than GPT-4o The one that is in mass release)🤖


Eventually the plan is for this one to go to the masses but until then if you pay you'll see it sooner💰

In what the FT called one of the "Strictest corporact crackdowns" Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a memo to all staff telling them that from next year they will be required to return to the office "the way we were before the onset of covid" 5 days a week👀


We've written a lot for about some of the implications this may make for women and the disabled but Amazon may be a trendsetter🏢


So what?

WFH has been heralded for some of its positives in enabling those who have challenges in getting into the office being able to contribute to work. We imagine more companies will follow in the footsteps as Amazon as some of these gains may not outway the perceived downsides for a set of (often privileged) leadersΒ
