🌟Shine Bright🌟

Following BTF we saw this great write up from our keynote session at BTF with Vanessa Kingori OBE

The conversation included the Vogue publisher’s keynote, which charted her journey from high fashion to high-tech, and why AI may hold the key to more inclusive workplaces — if marginalised people are part of shaping it. You can watch it on our BTF channels and read the write up here

🧪Scientific Racism🧪

Even if it is sourced it doesnt mean its correct. That means a lot when it comes down to an investigation we saw this week in Wired about Google, Microsoft, and Perplexity Are Promoting Scientific Racism in Search Results.

What happened? Well Patrik Hermansson, a researcher at anti anti-racism group Hope Not Hate, was looking into research that claims IQ scores can be used to prove the superiority of the white race and the subsequent resurgent race science movement.

What he found was that when he Googled results for the IQs of different nations by entering things such as “Pakistan IQ,” It gave him a definitive answer of 80 and when

he typed in “Sierra Leone IQ,” Google’s AI tool was even more specific: 45.07. These data points come from a debunked dataset. Yep rather than getting a typical list of links he was shown the Google’s AI Overviews by default appearing to state these points as fact.

Obviously this is problematic and well you can read more of the write up here

🧠Things that make you go hmmm🧠

🥇1,2 and 3🚗

Fresh off the back of a good set of earning reports by Tesla, it turns out the Cybertruck was the third best-selling electric vehicle in the United States in the last three months, beating every other Electric Vehicle not made by Tesla.

Number 1 and 2 were the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV.🚗

So what?

Turns out that unconventional designs and disruptive thinking can win big with consumers. Not only that but the brand pulling power demonstrated by Tesla underscores It's dominance in the electric vehicle market. Tesla is putting pressure on other automakers to innovate and catch up in the rapidly growing EV sector. Lets see if the move away from DEI by Ford and Toyota, help them catch up👀

🤖Vision pro👋🏾

Turns out selling a expensive VR headset that doesn't have many use cases for $3,500 and making it a commercial success is even a feat Apple can't pull off😅

Yep we don't like to comment on rumour too much (As facts do matter) but it has been trailed so widely for so long now that we thought we'd highlight it in what has been a slow news week. Yep we have seen a wave of reports highlighting;

Apple scales back Vision Pro production to 1,000 units daily amid cooling demand, with manufacturing potentially pausing in November 2024 as they (as we and many predicted they would) pivot focus toward developing a more affordable version of its mixed-reality headset.💸

So what?

A lot needs to go right for the Vision Pro to be a success. An area to think of a bit more is if developers are really making applications for it. Afterwall it's a vicious cycle, few users, means there is a smaller incentive for developers to spend time and energy creating something so few people will use, and with few things to use on it, you have fewer users. The traditional way to crack that nut would be for Apple to pay developers themselves to get a flywheel going, but even with that a price point of $3500 and fewer sales makes the business case a hard one to push.

Hey they still make Mac's and have announced the latest m4 model one this week.

💰The Budget💰

The highly anticipated budget statement from the UK Chancellor is due later today at around 12.30😮

There have been a large number of leaks to help sooth some of the market reaction to what is going to be quite a bleak picture (Even the prime minister says so). Naturally we looked into what some of the impact of it may be on our tech ecosystem and noted The Startup Coalition surveyed a number of startups and founders to get their view Here are some the findings

  • Founders really are worried about Capital Gains Tax (CGT) increases. 97% of founders and investors think that increases to CGT up to an equalisation with income tax would have a 'somewhat negative' or 'very negative' impact on the UK's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

  • There is a risk of a ‘brain drain’. 89% of founders surveyed would consider moving themselves or their business abroad, and 72% have already explored this. 94% would consider starting a future company abroad if CGT was raised.

  • Founders will be disincentivised. 87% of founders would feel less motivated to build a large-scale business in the UK and 88% would take cash out of their business earlier instead of reinvesting for growth.

  • And there would be downstream effects on investment:

    • 82% of founders would be less likely to undertake angel investment

    • 85% of angels would be less likely to continue investing into UK companies

    • 73% of institutional investors already investigated moving their fund’s focus away from the UK

It’s worth reflecting on what this would really mean. Just amongst the 524 founders (of the 713 total respondents) there is:

  • ÂŁ2.6bn of turnover at risk of moving abroad

  • 22,000 jobs at risk of moving abroad

So what?

The economy is a complicated beast but a lot of folks are worried about the impact for the vitality of the startup ecosystem especially if growth is an objective. Let's hope the news later today leaves folks a bit more optimistic than the above and whatever happens we'll give a write up next week
